Lawmakers voted Tuesday to pass a GOP-backed bill that will allow teachers to carry firearms in Tennessee schools.
HB1202 / SB1325 passed the Senate earlier this month, sparking outcries from teachers, students, Covenant School parents, and Democratic lawmakers — and there was plenty of heated debate before Tuesday’s vote on the House floor. Democrats called the bill “dangerous,” saying it will create more chaos in the event of an active shooter.
The legislation passed 68-28 and will now head to Gov. Bill Lee’s desk.
