Tennessee lawmakers no longer want students to hustle out of the classroom when a fire alarm goes off at school. Some claim fire alarms are an easy target for gunmen.
That’s exactly what happened to 9-year-old William Kinney. He was the line leader at The Covenant School on March 27, 2023, and thought he was leading his class to safety.
Last month, a Covenant parent read a letter on behalf of William’s grieving mother, begging for changes to policy.
The legislation would require schools to develop a procedure that would determine why a fire alarm was pulled. This would include a series of quick protocols to determine potential threats like active shooters.
On Thursday, the bill passed the House unanimously 97-0. It moves to a Senate committee next week.
